Chao Phraya River is entwined with every story of Bangkok. It is like all other rivers that flow through a major city. People have always preferred to settle along rivers throughout history and Chao Phraya has not had different past. The abundance of fish in the river and the fertility in the surroundings attracted early settlers. However, the western bank of the river became the capital of King Taksin following the downfall of Ayutthaya to Burmese. Modern Bangkok on the eastern bank of the river was developed by King Rama I in 1782. The network of tributaries and distributaries of River Chao Phraya have earned the title ‘Venice of the East’ for Bangkok.

The Chao Phraya River is considered as the lifeblood of the city as nearly fifty thousand people use the river everyday for various chores. The river has witnessed the growth of the city over the centuries and continues to play its part towards shaping up the future of this beautiful modern city.

Dinner Cruise

You can also opt for the Chao Phraya dinner cruise which promises to make the evening memorable. It offers the ideal opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings amidst cool breeze and pleasing environment. The river runs parallel to Phra Arthit Road which offers a unique view of cozy restaurants, quaint shop-houses as well as numerous bars and cafes.

Ideal Mode of Transportation in a Busy City

The boat taxi available on Chao Phraya River makes transportation quite easy in this bustling city. There are basically two types of boats available – the blue tourist boat and ordinary river boat. A one day trio on a blue boat for tourists usually costs around 150 Baht. While, on the other hand, travelling in ordinary boats is quite cheap and highly affordable. Private boat services are also available from some of the hotels that are situated close to the Chao Phraya River.
